"NEET 2024 Scandal Unveiled: 67 Students Tied for Rank 1 Amid Allegations of Paper Leaks and Irregularities"

The National Entrance Cum Eligibility Test, NEET, designed to select the nation's future doctors, has recently come under scrutiny due to alarming irregularities. Initially hailed as a merit-based alternative to the previous class 12th marks-based selection process, NEET's credibility has been called into question.
Since the National Testing Agency (NTA) took charge of conducting NEET, the process has been riddled with controversies, resembling a tragic comedy more than an assessment of academic prowess.

In a shocking development following the announcement of Lok Sabha results, NTA released the scorecard for NEET 2024, revealing a mockery of the examination system. Astonishingly, 67 students achieved perfect scores out of 720, rendering even full marks insufficient for securing admission to premier institutions like AIIMS, New Delhi, which offer only 50 seats in the open category.

The absurdity escalates as NTA faces the dilemma of determining admissions to AIIMS. With all top scorers achieving identical results, traditional tie-breaking criteria based on marks become irrelevant.NTA's solution? Prioritizing age as a tiebreaker, effectively favoring older candidates. In cases of age parity, application number becomes the deciding factor—a system criticized for its lack of meritocracy.

The scandal deepens with reports of paper leaks during the exam, a revelation compounded by instances of multiple candidates from the same center achieving perfect scores. Such anomalies, unimaginable in the past, cast doubt on the integrity of the examination process.

Students have long lamented the poor quality of exam questions and escalating cut-offs, yet little has been done to address these concerns. Instances of students receiving improbable scores, such as 719 or 718, further fuel suspicion.

Amid widespread outcry, NTA attempted to placate concerns by attributing the discrepancies to court-mandated bonus points awarded to candidates facing time constraints during the exam.

The NEET 2024 debacle underscores a broader crisis in India's education system, emphasizing rote learning over genuine comprehension. If such trends persist, students may be forced to seek alternatives to an educational system marred by scandal and inequity.
