Odisha Searches For A House For Its New Chief Minister

In anticipation of the BJP's forthcoming announcement of Odisha's new chief minister, efforts are underway to secure an official residence. Currently, the state lacks a designated CM residence, as Naveen Patnaik has operated from his personal residence, Naveen Niwas, for the past 24 years.

The general administration department has initiated a search for a suitable and spacious residence for the incoming chief minister. Several vacant quarters, including the CM's grievance cell, are being considered. Following the selection process, extensive renovations and installations will be undertaken, though this will require some time," a senior government official stated.

Historically, former Congress CMs JB Patnaik and Giridhar Gamang resided in a government quarter situated between Raj Bhavan and AG Square. This property was later repurposed into the chief minister's grievance cell by Naveen. In the interim, plans are in place to prepare a suite at the state guest house to accommodate the chief minister temporarily until a permanent residence is secured.Basanta Kumar Satpathy, a retired government official, noted, "During JB's and Giridhar Gamang's tenures, they occupied the same building, which now serves as the CM's grievance cell. Since Naveen assumed office in 2000, the quarter has remained unallocated."

Shishir Gamang, son of former CM Giridhar, emphasized the importance of the new chief minister's residence being accessible to the public, unlike Naveen Niwas. "My father welcomed people into our home during his tenure, fostering openness. In contrast, Naveen Niwas restricted public access. The new residence should maintain security while allowing public entry after proper checks," he remarked.
